Technology & Thanksgiving??

This is an awesome opportunity from Scholastic to participate in a more "interactive" study of the First Thanksgiving this year!

Register for virtual field trips to the Pilgrim village and the Wampanoag homesite. Whether you actually are able to watch the live webcasts or not, you'll receive really neat email letters from a Pilgrim girl and a Wampanoag boy that your class can read OR listen to together!

I registered for the virtual field trips (which was a quick and easy online form), and received this email:

Dear Jennifer Smith,

Thanks for registering for the email portion of your free Thanksgiving Teaching Kit!

Your class will receive a series of letters from Lizzy, a fictional character based on historical records of life in the 1620’s, who writes from aboard the Mayflower, from the Plimoth Plantation, and ends with her excited rendering of the first Thanksgiving. Along with learning about this young Pilgrim girl, your class will also get to know 12-year-old Pometacomet, a fictional member of the Wampanoag nation, who describes life in the autumn when the Mayflower was first sighted, his first impressions of the "coat-men," and, finally, the great feast with the Pilgrims!

All letters come with audio to give added life to Lizzy and Pometacomet and enhance the drama of their stories -- as well as offering pronunciation to new vocabulary introduced. Visually, the emails appear on a parchment like background and are accompanied by photographs. The roll out of the letters is meant to provide an historical backdrop to and build anticipation for the Virtual Field Trips to come – and to give you time for class discussion about each set of letters. As part of your registration, you will also receive email reminders for these video tours.

I love having new, fresh fonts on my computer to use on my documents. It is easy to download FREE fonts from the web. This site has a good collection to get you started. If you want even more, there are MANY other sites that offer free fonts. Just Google it.

Google Science Fair

On 11 January, 2011, Google is launching the inaugural Google Science Fair. They have partnered with NASA, CERN, National Geographic, Scientific American and the LEGO Group to create a new STEM competition that is more open, accessible and global than ever before. Google is reaching out to educators prior to launch to let you know “the Google Science Fair is coming” and to extend an invitation to schools and teachers to get involved early in our global competition.

To sign up for fun and free resource kits for your classroom or school (with bookmarks, stickers, posters and more!) and a reminder notification when GSF registration opens, please visit the Google Science Fair at:

The Google Science Fair is a global competition that any student aged 13 - 18 from around the world is eligible to enter. Students can enter as individuals or as teams of up to three. There is no entry fee and registration and submission will happen online. The deadline for submissions will be the 4 April, 2011. The Science Fair will culminate in a “once in a lifetime” celebratory event at Google headquarters in California in July 2011 where finalists will compete for internships, scholarships and prizes in front of a panel of celebrity scientist judges including Nobel Laureates, tech visionaries and household names.

GaETC 2010--Day 1

There are over 1800 attendees at this year's GaETC at the Georgia International Convention Center. Today was a great first day. We attended an opening session, concurrent sessions, and heard a hilarious keynote speaker--Jeanne Robertson. You can check her out on YouTube. You won't regret it!

I am conducting a workshop on web design using free, web 2.0 tools this week at the ETC. We are focusing on tools that can be used with students in the project-based learning competition, PROMOTE. You can learn more about PROMOTE here, and view winning Web sites from last year's competition.

It's helpful to start by teaching students about properly evaluating Web sites. Eduplace has a simple tutorial. Kathy Schrock also has several great resources on this topic.

For all of you Promethean product users out there, they have announced a new partnership with BrainPop. There is a new BrainPop "tab" that will appear in your software to use seamlessly with your Promethean ActiVotes or ActivExpressions! Your students will be able to take BrainPop quizzes with their remotes. Of course, you will have to have a subscription to BrainPop, or just take advantage of the free videos and quizzes.

I'm sure you are all familiar with the wonderful educational videos offered through Discovery Streaming. But, do you know what else is available through their site?

One really neat area on Discovery Education is the Writing Prompts Builder. Access thousands of writing prompts submitted by other DE users or create your own using images or videos from DE's library.

As I've written, I will continue to use this blog to post new ideas and tips that I stumble upon. The latest neat site that I heard about this week is a clearinghouse for educational videos. The site has organized any educational videos from anywhere on the web (YouTube, TeacherTube, etc...) by subject. They are rated by other educators using the site. If you find an educational video that you deem worthy, you can submit it to be included on WatchKnow.

Time sure does fly when you're having fun, huh?

It's time to find those magic wands and get those classrooms ready for the upcoming year!

Now is the perfect time to begin a teacher website! A teacher website is a great way to stay in touch with your parents and community, and it is a helpful way to keep yourself organized! There are several great ideas you can incorporate into a teacher website:

A calendar to summarize classroom events
A "student spotlight" area to give recognition to students
An extra resources area for those students who like to go deeper
An area for website links that you use often in your classroom or that students can access at home

Teacher websites have never been easier to set up, and there are plenty of FREE ones out there! Sometimes school districts provide teachers with a webpage as part of their school's website. But, these may be hard to work with. You can always just post a link on that page to your new teacher website that you create!

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to attend a podcasting workshop with Tony Vincent. It is always fun to hear Tony speak. He is an excellent presenter. Tony has been at the forefront of podcasting since it started becoming popular in schools a few years ago. He has worked with a school that creates "Character Counts" podcasts. Capitol Tech 2010

It was our pleasure at the ETC to accompany a group of students and their teacher to Capitol Tech 2010, held at the Georgia State Capitol, March 8. The students showed off their technology expertise and used the same equipment that they have in their classroom to do demonstrations for legislators and others that attended. They were outstanding!

We had the opportunity to meet several legislators, including Representative Mike Cheokas, from Americus.

Tag Galaxy

If you or your students are looking for pictures to use in your classroom, Tag Galaxy is a really fun site to visit.

When you arrive at Tag Galaxy they will ask you for a "tag." A tag is a keyword or term that is assigned to a piece of information. If you are looking for pictures of volcanoes, the tag you would type in is "volcanoes." It is simply a keyword.

Click GO and it will show you a "galaxy" of available images. Click on the planet that looks the most appropriate. It will then show you a world of photos. You can navigate through the world using your mouse.

Tag Galaxy is a really cool way to search for photos!

This site has been around for a long time, but I was reminded about it during a workshop today. It still is very cool, and maybe will be new to some of you. This comes from their site:

"The Favorite Poem Project is dedicated to celebrating, documenting and encouraging poetry’s role in Americans’ lives. Robert Pinsky, the 39th Poet Laureate of the United States, founded the Favorite Poem Project shortly after the Library of Congress appointed him to the post in 1997.

During the one-year open call for submissions, 18,000 Americans wrote to the project volunteering to share their favorite poems — Americans from ages 5 to 97, from every state, of diverse occupations, kinds of education and backgrounds."

Quick and Easy Videos with One True Media

If you want to make a quick photo montage, literally with the click of one button, then try out One True Media. All I had to do was choose the images to upload to my project, then my video was made! There are options to add titles, captions, or customize the music choice and style. It was fun and would be a quick project for your students. You do have to create a login so that the site will keep up with your projects. You can share your projects online, as I did with this blogpost, or save them. Try it!

Lexipedia is the ultimate online dictionary and thesaurus. Type in a word, and it presents you with a word web.

I always enjoy listening to Tammy Worcester. I've had the opportunity to hear her speak several times. I saw the Sony Webbie camera today. It is a slightly larger, slightly pricier "flip" style video camera. It still allows for very easy upload of video, through memory "sticks," but is better quality than the regular flip-style camera. From the Sony site:

Another tip I picked up from her, is to never connect your digital camera to your computer. It drains your camera battery 10 times faster than taking pictures. She recommends using card readers, which are inexpensive and easy to use. Another digital photography tidbit she included is her favorite type of SD card for your camera: SanDisk Extrene III or IV.

Manipulating Digital Images

Tony Vincent presented "Manipulating Digital Images" and showcased several fun, free resources to manipulate digital photos. Why would we use images in the classroom? Images have a direct route into the long-term memory. Your eyes are giving you so much more information than your ears are!

Photoshop Disasters is a fun blog just to browse, where digitally manipulated images have gone horribly wrong.

The Magic of Mimio

Let the Fun Begin...

We are here! We've seen a few friends from our area already.

This morning, we arrived at the Convention Center and attended the Welcome Session. At the Welcome Session, Dr. Traci Reddish, Conference Chair, mentioned that there are 1700 attendees at the conference this year. So, attendance is good, and the selection of workshops and concurrent sessions is great. If you want to browse the conference program, you can do so by visiting the GaETC website, http://www.gaetc.org/.

Dr. Wayne Robinson, Ga Ed Tech Consortium President, spoke briefly and mentioned the Student Technology Fair. It will be held in Macon on March 14, 2010. You can get more information about the fair at their site http://www.gaetf.org/.

Kathy Cox is not in attendance at the conference, but spoke to the group via video. She mentioned the conference theme "The Challenge of Change," and thanked technology leaders across the state for initiating technological innovation and change.
